Captains Report 2005
The Club enjoyed, and the
operative word is “enjoyed” a mixed season in 2005, with some
close finishes. Walkovers are a bore, and none of our matches
fell into that category. Our batting was strong, with the
majority of the team on any occasion capable of reaching the
magical retirement number of 20. Our bowling was not
particularly hostile, and occasionally wayward, but we could
rely on at least five run-brakers (rather than
partnership-breakers). There was a marked improvement in the
fielding, with the team in general bringing some more youthful
verve to our efforts.
It is sad to record
that both Richard Stewart and Don Tidey have put their bats in
the attic. Their keenness and fighting qualities will indeed be
missed. We need some new blood. A few accurate bowlers would be
manna from Heaven! We are hoping that David Ingram who performed
notably against Malahide in the penultimate fixture will be
available on a regular basis in 2006.
Thank You Time!:-
Bruce Hill was an unflappable strength behind the scenes. Geoff
Nurse put so much expertise into our website with information
and photos; particularly in the final match versus The Other
Dalkey where he featured his hapless and hopeless captain’s
bails flying through the air. Without Castle Park School there
would be no Dalkey Archives Club. Our deep gratitude is owed to
the new Headmaster, Denis McSweeney, who continues CP’s happy
association with D/A.
There is much
speculation about the identity of my successor. A late entry to
the field is Miss SISI Kellett, who, unlike the outgoing
captain , kept her eyes on the ball.
My thanks, in
conclusion, to all who contributed to making my final year of
tenure another happy and fulfilling experience.

CAPTAIN’S
REPORT 2004
The 2004 Season had
two unusual features: (1). not a single match was left
unfinished due to rain, and (2) it was the club’s least
unsuccessful season ever in results. This should not blind
us to the fact that several matches were near run things; in the
best Taverners’ tradition, being disputed until the final over.
There is nothing more
unsatisfactory than a one-sided contest, and there was only one
of that nature:- when we were comprehensively beaten by our
good friends The Other Dalkey on 4th September.
Time and again the
lucky captain could call on players to achieve the Landmark of
20+ (retired), but let us not forget the frequent invaluable
scrambled few at the end of an innings which just saw us home.
The bowlers, too, kept their collective heads during the final
few overs. Nerve-wracking finishes are the essence of the
Taverners’ game. We enjoyed much essence.
All twenty four who
turned out for us should be thanked for their efforts, but if I
might give a 5 * Thank You to both Bruce Hill, for being such an
unflappable Supremo behind the scenes, and the ever-reliable
Geoff Nurse, who scored six Twenties for us, and was usually the
first on the ground to check that all was in order.
My final feeling
about the season is continued gratitude to Castle Park School,
which reached it’s own Century in March 2004, and which has been
such a supporter of Dalkey Archives since its inception. I am
sure that the Founder of CP, W.P.Toone, a High Priest of
Cricket, would be pleased that his “Religion” is so keenly
practised by both young and old on the ground which he loved so
greatly.
Morgan Dockrell.
